MDDI published an article this week titled Procedure Volumes Are Rebounding Faster than Expected —but Still Far from Normal. The article focuses on a survey, conducted by analyst Kyle Rose of Canaccord Genuity. The survey polled 51 Orthopedic Practices about their opinion on future surgical case volume. Here is a quick breakdown of the survey results:

Expected Surgical Volume Decline

  • 68% drop in May vs 2019
  • 49% drop in June vs 2019
  • 38% drop in July vs 2019

Roadblocks to Recovery

  • 51% stated operating room availability
  • 41% stated patient demand

Timing of Recovery

  • 18% expected procedure volumes to return to normal in the 3rd Quarter
  • 27% expected procedure volumes to return to normal in the 4th Quarter

It is interesting to note that these numbers dropped from 32% and 46%, respectively, when the firm conducted the April survey. It is obvious the situation is very fluid and this survey at the end of next month could indeed look very differently.
