The Superbowl of Foot and Ankle: 2020 Virtual Congress

The Super Bowl of Foot and Ankle is coming at you with a boatload of foot and ankle talks over the weekend starting Friday at 8pm EST.

  • 102 Faculty members
  • 136 Talks
  • 48 Hours of content

Dr. Mark Myerson, the executive director of Steps 2 Walk, has put together a monster line up of surgeon’s from around the globe. Topic’s range from tarsal coalitions to Total Ankle Replacement. Technique tips and new ideas are a big part of these talks which cover a wide range of complex foot and ankle issues.

We have highlighted 1 talk from each session below, please note that each session has about 5 talks each averaging roughly 5-10min in length. There is a total of 4 Modules lasting about 9 hours each, starting Friday at 8pm EST. It has to be assumed that these talks will be recorded and made available for viewing on demand at a later date.

It will be interesting to hear some of the international takes on some current trends in the US market:

  • 3-dimensional bunion correction from Bangkok
  • Total talus replacement tips from Japan
  • Use of titanium mesh cage for mid foot bone loss from India
  • Arthroscopic subtalar fusion from France

In addition to some of the international thought leaders such as Andy Goldberg, Christian Ortiz, and Beat Hinterman, the US also has a line-up of renowned presenters as well including: Paul Fortin, John Anderson, Lew Schon, and Chris Coetzee to name a few.

Paragon 28 is sponsoring this event, which is expected, as Myerson is a large shareholder in the company. Expect to see a few talks featuring their products, but I do not foresee this as being a Paragon 28 showcase. These are legit talks by legit surgeons from the US and around the globe.

Get the coffee brewing, put the kids to bed, and strap in for all the foot and ankle you can handle this weekend.

MIS Bunion - Product Offering Review

SEMRUSH, a keyword analytics tool, reveals that there are over 964,000 searches related to bunion surgery annually in the US. Many of these people will stumble upon ads and articles promoting MIS as an option for these procedures.

The purpose of this article is not to debate the validity of MIS bunions procedures as every foot and ankle surgeon has some opinion on it, positive, negative, or neutral. The post-op x-rays being shared across various social media platforms are scary enough to push anyone away.

X-rays aside, there are many perceived benefits that MIS provides for bunion surgery: less pain and swelling, smaller incisions, faster return to function, and shorter OR times for those with experience.

Learning MIS, like anything new, takes practice. Before jumping in, it is recommended to get some hands-on training to familiarize yourself with the equipment and surgical technique. Most of those who teach the procedure encourage prospective users to start with less technical procedures, such as a cheilectomy.

Currently, 3 companies offer dedicated systems for MIS bunion surgery. Each of these companies has dedicated websites with Medical Education and Marketing Resources for both patients and surgeons. Below are links to each of those sites where you can find videos, surgical techniques, training options, and direct to patient marketing tools (surgeon finders and other forms of patient outreach).

ARTHREX - MIS

NOVA STEP - PECA

WRIGHT MEDICAL - PROSTEP

Each of these companies’ platforms in terms of instrumentation are somewhat similar, the main difference is the recommended osteotomy type, transverse vs chevron. Is a chevron stronger? Can you get frontal plane correction using the chevron? Questions for another blog.

Here is a chart quickly outlining the systems and what options are offered:

CROSSROADS – Mini Bunion, Wright Medical – Iso Plate, and Nova Step – Centrolock also offer intramedullary plating options as a less invasive solution for hallux valgus.
