New Home for the STAR
A final hurdle to completing the acquisition of Wright Medical is the requirement by the UK Competition and Markets Authority to divest the STAR ankle replacement. It appears that the orthopedic division of Don Joy (DJO, LLC) will be the new home of the mobile bearing, Scandinavian Total Ankle Replacement.
DJO, known for their bracing dominance, in recent years has become an entry level player in knee, hip, and shoulder arthroplasty. Adding an ankle replacement to the bag will round out their arthroplasty offerings and add to their continuum of patient care mantra. DJO is a low risk competitor that will pose little threat to Stryker’s new market leading TAR portfolio which is coming with the Wright acquisition.
Stryker reps will be under a non-compete and will not be able to move with the STAR ankle. DJO reps will need to get up to speed quickly to support the cases of the doctors who choose to stick with the STAR. In addition, Stryker reps who sold and covered STAR cases will not be able to sell or cover Wright TAR products to those same STAR doctors for a period of 1 year.
Overall, a brilliant dump off for Stryker.
Infinity TAR Upgrades
Wright Medical announced that the Infinity Total Ankle line will now be available with Adaptis Technology.
Adaptis tibial and talar components are 3D printed, porous metal components designed to act as a scaffold that facilitates bone in-growth “in as early as 4 weeks.” The Adaptis technology migrated down from their Tornier upper extremity team, where it continues to be used in their Total Shoulder Platform.
In addition to Adaptis, Wright released Everlast, a highly cross-linked vitamin E infused polyethlene. This type of poly has been the industry standard in large joint arthroplasty for a while now as it has been proven to increase wear resistance. Considering all the well documented issues surrounding osteolysis and cyst formation in the literature, this was a much needed and long overdue upgrade for the leader in ankle arthroplasty.
Hintegra Aquired by Villex
DT MedTech, LLC the owners of the the Hintegra H2 (fixed bearing) and Hintegra H3 (mobile bearing) were acquired by McMinnville, TN based Vilex.
Vilex will be the only company in the US to offer both a mobile and fixed bearing prosthesis option. The H3, developed by world renowned surgeon Beat Hinterman, with over 20 years of success in Europe, has yet to make much noise in the US market. Vilex with 50 distributors in the US will look to move the needle this year and carry over some of the success the implant has had overseas, no doubt an uphill battle awaits.
Paragon 28's APEX 3D Receives FDA Approval
The long-awaited approval of P28’s APEX 3D ankle finally arrived.
Similar to Wright Medical’s announcement, the APEX has 3D printed tibial trays along with highly cross-linked polys. A unique feature offered by this implant is that the tibial trays are available in two styles – flat cut and a coronal ARC which will potentially provide additional rotational stability.
The fixation for both style trays come in the form of “Two vertical pegs positioned slightly posterior to midline where peak bone density is located for initial fixation and stabilization." The system offers both chamfer and flat cut talus options that are tapered to avoid gutter impingement.
Their instrumentation as seen on their technique guide looks very similar to Wright’s Infinity. Paragon is still awaiting FDA approval on their PSI system. It will be interesting to see how the APEX performs clinically and from a sales perspective in an all of a sudden, very crowded TAR space.
AOFAS Summer Meeting - 2020
The live, virtual portion of the AOFAS at Home summer meeting will kick off tomorrow at 2pm CST.
At this time last year attendees were arriving at O’Hare and Exhibitor's were scrambling to set-up in the convention center.
This year, things are obviously different. A virtual conference has been organized over the last two months and many new tech focused challenges had to be answered by both industry participants and AOFAS leadership and staff.
