COVID-19 Surgical Volume Survey Results
MDDI published an article this week titled Procedure Volumes Are Rebounding Faster than Expected —but Still Far from Normal. The article focuses on a survey, conducted by analyst Kyle Rose of Canaccord Genuity. The survey polled 51 Orthopedic Practices about their opinion on future surgical case volume. Here is a quick breakdown of the survey results:
Expected Surgical Volume Decline
- 68% drop in May vs 2019
- 49% drop in June vs 2019
- 38% drop in July vs 2019
Roadblocks to Recovery
- 51% stated operating room availability
- 41% stated patient demand
Timing of Recovery
- 18% expected procedure volumes to return to normal in the 3rd Quarter
- 27% expected procedure volumes to return to normal in the 4th Quarter
It is interesting to note that these numbers dropped from 32% and 46%, respectively, when the firm conducted the April survey. It is obvious the situation is very fluid and this survey at the end of next month could indeed look very differently.
One question we are interested in that was not mentioned in the article is surgical volume moving from the hospital to outpatient ASCs, so we want to survey the FAN readers:

May 510K Clearance
Treace, known for its Lapiplasty system, received 510k clearance for its TMC Plating System . It not known what exact systems will be released or when, but the FDA paperwork has the system cleared for most indications in the foot. The document also makes mention of Lapiplasty® Mini-Incision™ Plates which leads us to believe an MIS system is also in the works. The bunion battles are reaching a boiling point and Treace is looking to add to its repertoire.
New TAR System
In2Bones quietly announced the Quantum Total Ankle earlier this year after the prosthesis gained FDA approval. The Quantum Total Ankle is a low profile, primary ankle replacement with a tibial component that has a central cruciate and a talar dome that was designed with a dual radius of curvature.
Preoperative planning software (Orthoplanify) which plans to compete with Wright’s Prophecy, is still awaiting FDA Clearance. This implant is due to launch sometime this summer.
It is definitely an exciting time in the Ankle Replacement space. With potentially 6 or 7 new systems launching in the next three years, the market will be loaded with new competition. How will they be different? What changes need to be made to prolong longevity?
Dr. Alan Davis, MD, of the Cleveland Clinic, tries to answer those questions where he dives into the needs of the next generation of ankle replacements and comments on the features and benefits of the Quantum Total Ankle in this article featured on Orthoworld.

Surgical Software Company Receives CE Mark
Disior , a medical technology company focused on the development and commercialization of analytics software for medical doctors, announced it has received CE Mark approval (Medical Device Class IIb) for the foot and ankle analysis application.
“The CE mark approval is a significant milestone for Disior as it required thorough regulatory review against high clinical and safety standards”, said Anna-Maria Henell, CEO of Disior. “This is an important leap forward for our company, as we are bringing to market a novel and automated tool for analyzing radiographic angles, measurements and reference points that we are confident will benefit both healthcare providers and patients.”

Paragon 28 Offers Unique Individualized Live Product Trainings
Paragon 28 announced their Focus 28 Virtual Series for surgeons. This approach is very unique in that surgeons can schedule one-on-one training from product experts at a time that works for them.
Paragon is offering 2 options for training which vary between 30 and 120 minutes, the later to include hands on training. We assume that hands on training would require the surgical instrumentation, interested to hear if the product sets are sent to the physician's location.
Surgeons can customize each training block and the focus can be on any of the following modules:
- Hallux Valgus and Forefoot Innovations
- Flatfoot 360 – Flexible and Rigid
- Precision Guided Ankle Fusion
